By the end of this lesson, you can design a 5S standard that makes a missing, stale or unsafe condition visible instead of merely making a workplace look tidy.
Why it matters
Organisation fails when people must remember where the correct state is hidden. A visible standard reduces search and exposes deviation early enough to act.
Core concept: normal, abnormal, response
Every useful 5S standard answers:
- What does the normal state look like?
- How is an abnormal state detected?
- Who restores, quarantines or escalates it?
- What evidence shows the standard helps the work?
This applies to a labelled tool location and to a digital record with owner, effective date and expiry.

Worked example

Any expired or ownerless file moves to a review queue. The useful measure is wrong-price incidents and retrieval time—not the number of folders deleted.
Common mistake
Mistake: deleting an item because it is rarely used.
Frequency is only one input. An emergency or regulated record may be rare and critical. Use consequence, ownership and retention rules, with reversible quarantine when uncertain.
